Biography
Cornelius Wambi Gulere (PhD) was born in Nsinze, Uganda, in 1968. He was appointed Senior Lecturer at Uganda Christian University in 2017, to take charge of graduate research programs in the Department of Languages and Literature. He received the B.A. M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Literature from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, in 1986, 2000 and 2016 respectively. In 2001, he joined the Departments of Literature, at Makerere and Kyambogo Universities, as Part-Time Lecturer, and in 2002 received the Master’s degree in Management of Development from the University of Turin, Italy. Since 2005, he has been with the Mpolyabigere Community Libraries, Nsinze, where he was a Director of Research and Education, became a Graduate Fellow in 2007, and Visiting Research Scholar at the University of York in 2008 and 2009. His current research interests include riddles, riddling and collective knowledge creation, aesthetic documentation, and authentic translation. Dr. Gulere is a Fellow of the African Humanities Program of the American Council of Learned Societies (AHP/ACLS); and the Mak-NUFU Folklore Linkage Project (Uganda). He is a Member of the International Association for the Study of Sexuality and Culture (IASSC), the Association of Local Language Educationalists, Researchers and Translators (Uganda); the Lusoga Language Authority; and the Lusoga Language Academic Board (LLAB). He was the Founder of LLAB and organized its inaugural conference (Kibale 2012) leading to the introduction of Lusoga Language and Literature in the National High School Curriculum. He has written and published widely and made tremendous contribution to Lusoga. His recent publications include 20 Lusoga-English children’s stories with African Storybook Project (SAIDE, South Africa), translations of 40 stories in the Lusoga-English Bilingual books (British Council, Uganda 2013), piloting Lusoga versions of Austin Bukenya: The Bride (Omugole), Francis Imbuga: Betrayal in the City (Enkwe mu Kibuga), William Shakespeare: King Lear (Kyabazinga Mukama), Wole Soyinka: The Trials of Brother Jero (Ebikemo by’Owoluganda Yero), Sophocles: Antigone (Nantameigwa), 200 proverbs (endheso) and 600 riddle acts.
