Richard Cowling was the director of the Institute for Plant Conservation at UCT and Professor of Botany at Nelson Mandela University. He was a prolific photographer of southern African landscapes and led many of the conservation initiatives in the 1990s and 2000s. Richard is one of South Africa's most highly regarded ecologists and is best known for his research into the biodiversity, use and conservation of the Fynbos, Succulent Karoo and Subtropical Thicket biomes.
