This map shows typhoid-affected areas of Port Elizabeth in 1897. The red numbers show the distribution of houses affected by typhoid fever. Out-dated names like ‘Strangers Location’ and ‘Native Burial Ground’ are of interest. The colonial tenor of the times is evident in the names of Somerset Street, Queen Street, Victoria Quay, Scotch Cemetery, cricket ground, football ground… A smattering of old/street English comes through in the spelling of the word ‘shewing’.
