Description
Based on Aeschylus’ Suppliants. Originally commissioned as The Suppliants After Aeschylus After Kosovo by Border Crossings, supported by the Arts Council England in collaboration with Athlon (Greece) and first performed at The Lion King Theatre in London, then at the Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh Festival from 31 July to 25 August 1999. Hammerschlag then workshopped it with African refugee women from the Jesuit and Bienvenu Refugee Centres in Johannesburg for performance in South Africa. The play also incorporated characters from Medea, Women of Trachis, and Prometheus Bound.
