Description

Many, if not all, queer men in South Africa have heard the term moffie. I know I’ve heard it more times than I can count growing up in Cape Flats. If you show the slightest amount of swing in your hips, a softer tone of voice or associate yourself with cliques of girls you’d be labelled a moffie. Moffie, a term that was created to shame men for expressing femininity. According to The Oxford Languages Dictionary the word moffie can be associated with the Afrikaans word ‘moffiedaai’ which in turn could be deriving from ‘hermafrodiet’. Calling someone a moffie/a hermaphrodite, is to signify that the person is not fully a ‘man’. There were many encounters where individuals would come to me, not having any idea as to who I am, and they’d ask: ‘ARE YOU A MOFFIE?’. I’d always look at them in the eyes and stare blankly. Now, I wish I had screamed ‘YES! AND NOW WHAT?’ directly into their eardrums so that it echoes loudly in the space where their brain (and hopefully intelligence) is supposed to be found.

Fantasia is a night club that reflects the highs and lows of queer people. It brings focus to the importance of community, a consistent support, and what the world of drag looks like through a 3-dimensional lens – personal life, the dressing room, and the stage. This performance is about reclaiming the word moffie and transforming it into a word of power and resilience, celebrating the ones that owns it and those who revolts at its sound. Enter the doors of Fantasia and bare witness to what it has to offer.
