Description
Ma se Seun: an Applied Dance choreography, as part of African Gumbo, 21-22 May 2022 Studio Theatre, CTDPS. Inspired by interviews and dance workshops with the Alcardo Andrews Foundation (AAF) in Hanover Park.
“Mammie, please tell our story.” It is with these words ringing in their heads that the small cast of Ma se Seun listened to Avril Andrews recollect one of the last conversations with her son, Alcardo. Their choreographic piece speaks about the tragic deaths of sons of the Cape Flats, told through the memories of their beloved mothers. Once called home, now their neighbourhood is filled with crime scene artefacts and grieving families. A mother’s love is reflected in her journey of grief and remembrance and mirrors the turmoil of mothers who lost their sons to gang violence.
The overarching theme for the 4th year Applied Performance students this year was ‘Dance as Activism’. The cast members contacted the Alcardo Andrews Foundation and its chairperson, Avril Andrews. ""Aunty Avril"" runs a programme, Moms Move for Justice, which is one of the pillars of the AAF. After three workshops in Hanover Park with children, as well as interviews with mothers who had lost their children to gang violence and crime, the group collectively devised a performance piece incorporating dance and words.
