Immelman Building

Named after Rene-Ferdinand Malan Immelman (1905-1982), university librarian and Director of the School of Librarianship from 1940 to 1970. He began at UCT as a teacher and later went on to read German for his MA. He was a pioneer in the field of South African Librarianship and an impeccable researcher of Cape local history. He contributed to the library collection by engaging donors and initiating the position of Director of the School of Librarianship. In this position he established exchange programmes with other universities, recognising that the UCT budget would not allow for the kind of collections required. Source: Schaefer, A.
