Label Information
Mgudlandlu referred to herself as "the first black woman teaching artist in the Republic", testifying to the enormous social and political obstacles that lay- and largely continue to lie- between black women artists and the pursuit of art as a viable career. For most of her working life her paintings were not seen by the public as she devoted herself to teaching art to children at the Athlone Bantu Community School. Since her "discovery" in the early 1960s her work has received much acclaim. In this relatively early work, (she only started painting in the late 1950s,) she emphasises the treacherous teeth of the rocks in the sea around Mossel Bay through a simple and stark composition rendered with a minimal palette and high tonal contrast.
