Label Information
This diptych was a key piece in Mary Visser's solo show "Nocturnes" held at the Irma Stern Museum in July 2005. The harbour is of particular interest to her. Although not painted from a fixed viewpoint but rather the idea of the harbour- a composite of many viewpoints and impressions. The painting was built up by many layers of dribbled and brushed on oil colour, with each layer becoming more graphic; reducing and obscuring the forms. The layered paint echoing the layered history. Influenced by the composition of Japanese graphic art. Mary Visser was born in Cape Town and graduated from Rhodes University with a Bachelor of Fine Art. Employed as a part time lecturer at various learning institutions including Community Arts Project and Ruth Prowse School of Art. In 1996, together with artists Jenny Parsons and Diane Page, she started the Boudoir Biscuits, a collective of women artists. The group have collaborated on numerous projects and exhibitions and provide each other with ongoing support and inspiration. In 2002 the Biscuits were one of three finalists in the Cape Town International Conventional Centre National art competition. They were awarded the design contract for the carpets in the Judges Chambers in the New Constitutional Court Building in Johannesburg in 2003. Currently, Mary lectures part time in drawing and illustration in the fashion design department at CAPUT ( Cape Peninsula University of Technology) and works as a professional artist from her studio in Salt River.
