This resource is intended to promote and restore the cultural legacy of the San and Khoi people, and to highlight the connection between people, animals and places. The Animal Names resource presents a collection of animal names with its various San and Khoi language representations alongside its scientific, or Latin, name and Afrikaans language version. This collection also showcases the Southern African place names derived from the San and Khoi names of animals. The information presented here is collected from the book “Of the same breath: Indigenous animal and place names” with kind permission of its author Lucy A. Möller and publisher Sun Media with the intention to promote and restore the cultural heritage of the Khoi and San.
This resource is still in its development process. The first phase aggregates the various language representations in an accessible and user-friendly way. This is complete and presented here. Follow up actions, include the extension of the collection of animal names in other Southern African languages. The secondary phase is to refine the list of place names associated with San and Khoi language versions of specific animals in order to showcase them visually on a map. While the basic information can be found here it is unrefined and further development is required to reach the desired degree of representation within the resource and the archive as a whole.
