Kuyga, Kuygas (Flats)
On his first trip, Gordon 1778 describes the landscape and tells O.A. About Koegasmond '... Being crippled in and behind Duins so long and something longer as Man and Horse, but so dare of Dooms Aloes and Euphorbias that Men is not as Door Door WiltPades Can Koeuren' (MS / 124). Swartkops River indeed had under the Khoekhoen the name of 'Melkboom River', cf. Gouw. We believe Kuyga (s) should be translated the same way, viz. as 'milk-up place', with the member -ga like Nama -Xa = Many , rich in, full of, and the kuy- like Nama GUI for milk tree, an Euphorbia sp., cf. Smith CA 1969 CNSAP 335, 'A Name Applied ... To Nearly All The Arborescent Species or Euphorbia ... 'The Khoekhoen name will be old. From the farm notices, names appear from these areas such as 'Aloes' at 3325 DC, 'milkwood tree', also 'Melkhoutefontein', at 3324 DB, and what we regard everything as indications in the designated direction.
