So far, our only recording of the old inland name of this Groot River received at the outweight point by the Gourits River, district Mossel Bay. Buffelsland River is then an alternative name in his Khoekhoense. The translation at Gordon is unambiguous. However, the transcript is at all unsure, and is given here as at the transcribe. We believe that the member is then connectable to the word for buffalo, in Old Cape at Witsen 1691 T'Aouw, also T'kau (see Hott 235 for other forms), in Nama ǀ Gao. The -cou will then correlate with eg. Koraǃ Gu-B, Nama tooǃ Gu- andǃ Hu- = 'Land' (Rust 1960 DNW 38). Is the closing member perhaps equal to Namaǃ A- = River, in this Cape region among the Gourits speakers' E, with the blunt accent like ǃ? In Nama, the return is then to read as ǀ Gaoǃ Guǃ A (b). If the topographical series 1973 is consulted 3320 Ladi Smith, it will be strongly striking how brink the number of place and farm names is still the word 'buffalo' as ingredient. There is Seifs a 'Buffalo River' at 3320 Bb to remind us of how abundant these cattle were in the early years.
