Zuney

It seems to be sure that Zuney Khoekhens is, but about its meaning we are uninformed. The name is apparently old. Location names from the environment also do not give any reasonable starting points. What remains now is sound axis, we do not want to participate in.

eng Afdelingskaart 1890 Alexandria 'Zuney', en op ander kaarte. Skead CJ 1979 Brief 'Zuney, one of the bestknown farming areas in Alexandria district, a long valley running roughly east to west with the Graafwater Valley running south towards the sea on a very level plain. Zuney is about 18 km west of Alexandria town. I found no Xhosa person who could give any Xhosa significance to the word Zuney as such. Nor can any white person offer a sensible meaning. Mr V.K. Fick of Glenshaw farm said that one explanation heard there is that the narrow depth of the valley inhibits distant views to anyone in the valley, hence ‘Sien-nie’ or ‘Zien-nie’ being corrupted to Zuney. This is merely given for recording purposes...' Die Xhosanaam van Zuney, so deel mnr Skead mee, is Elantywentywe. 'Meaning: ‘Much water, or marshy’, says Pahl. There are marshes and flood areas in the south at Graafwater'.
