eng We have often found that where an Afrikaans name is given as an alternative to a Khoekhoense name, it is a translation of the Khoekhoense name. If it was the case here, 'long reed fountain' would have been a translation of 'guerna'. We don't believe it's so. 'Reed' is in Nama ╪a (Kr.-r. 1969 NW 32) and it can be associated with '-na'. But we find no word that means 'long' that can be associated with 'guer'. To the south and east of Guerna, the Baviaanskloofbos Serve. There is 'fragrance nakop' with land surveyor No. 24. To the north of the bushres, with one corner touching the farm Guerna, the farm is 'Spans- Riet Hole' No. Hu. Q. 4-4. The names 'guerna', 'scent' and 'spansriet hole' form a toponimic core group. Interessant is dit dat Smith t.a.p. as alternatiewe volksnaam vir die spaans(e)riet 'giant reed' aangee. Dan is daar wel ’n semantiese verband tussen 'Guerna' en 'lang Riet'. Hierteenoor staan die verklaring van mnr Neuman van Guerna. Ons kan dit nog taalkundig nog kerngroepsgewys versoen om dit oortuigend te maak.
