Volgens die plekname hier is die wêreld baie koud (vgl. ‘‘Koud Nek’s Rante', suid daarvan 'Koud Nek', en daarop 'Kouewindjiekloof'. In Nama het ons ’n woord wat na 'n aan- knopingspunt lyk, nl. Igommi = 'Eis, Reif, Eiseskalte' (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 127), toegepas op hierdie geval gee dit dan die 'Kloof waar dit yskoud (ǃgom-si) is'. Dit stel die vraag aan die orde in hoeverre die plaasname 'Koud Nek' en 'Koud nek’s rante' hierby aansluit, nl. as vertaling t.o.v. die eerste lid 'Koud'. Dat die Hollandse name oud is, blyk uit die Neder- landse 'vorm' daarvan.
