Tchando, Tjando, Tchando(Kloof)
We have to do here with the name of a farm, a gorge and a river, LG. Two with addition of the generic terms 'gorge' and 'river'. 'Tchandokloof' is on the northern hang of the Kouga Mountains. It runs over the farm 'Vlei Gorge' No WLM. Q. 2-23, Dist. Willowmore, and join the Baviaanskloof River. We believe that the names 'Tchando (gap' and 'Vlei Gorge' form a topographical and toponimic unit, M.A.W. that the place names are geographically and linguistically related. For 'Valley' is recorded in Old Cape O.A. 'Tkaa' and 'TK ~ AA' (Hott 490). The diascape and Tilde represent nationality. The first member of the place name, viz. 'Tchan-', is possible like 'Tkaa' or 'Tkaa'; The nationality is realized in 'Tchan' by the n. The second member of the name, viz. '-Do', often occur for 'DAO' = port (Rust 1960 DNW 47), cf. e.g. Addo, Gydo. If exactly, 'Vlei Gorge' is a translation of the Khoekhoian 'Tchando'. The member '-kloof' in 'Tchandokloof' or, as the name appears on the corresponding topographical map 1973, 'chicken', is then toutological. 'Vleikloof (Kloof)'.
