Gwerna, Ghwerna (Se Berg)
The northwest of 'lawy' Le 'Riet Vley', Place No Geo. Q. 10-22. If the names 'moldy', 'ghwerna' and 'reed flatter' form a toponimic core group, we would also expect a semantic connection between the names. At Guerna, we expressed the suspicion that 'Guer (after)' may mean 'Spanish (e) reed'. We believe the agreement between guerna there and 'badway' - / 'ghwerna' here is big enough to believe it can be the same word. If so, and the fact that guerna and 'g (h) Werna' both in connection with 'reed' strengthen the suspicion, then refer 'Riet Vlei' to a specific reed, viz. The Spanish (s) cane. In other words, the different places 'guerna' and 'g (h) Werna' then have the same meaning, and the younger African comments of each of the two nameship groups refer thereafter.
