Ons meen ons kan op taalkun- dige grond die bewering verstewig. Aasvogelberg is miskien die vertaling van die Khoekhoense naam Qua. le Vaillant 1780-3 het 'n optekening uit die oostelike dialek, getranslitereer ╪ghai-p, wat hy vertaal met 'vulture, aas- vogel'. In 1783 vertaal hy sy ghaip uit die Namataal met 'swart aasvoel'. Daarby gee die Korakenner l lloyd vir die Vultur kolbii op: kx’ao-p. Met as aanknopingspunt die huidige Afrikaanse naam lyk dit baie moontlik dat Qua, met die bepaalde lidwoord De vooraan uit Nederlands, die inlandse woord vir 'aasvoel'' is. Die lid 'berg' is toegevoeg en nie vertaal nie. [Vir bewysmateriaal vgl. HOTT 204 s.v. aasvoel en 475 s.v. swart-aasvoel]. Daar is egter 'n taalkundige oorweging wat ons versigtig moet maak. Aasvoeiberg (die naam is op die Topo-kadastrale kaart so in Afrikaans in- geskryf, en nie as Aasvogelberg nie) le noordwesnoord van Willowmore en na aan die grootpad; nader aan die dorp le Duisterniskop (suidwestelik van Aasvoeiberg). lichtenstein 1805 teken vir 'duisternis' op: ǃkai- (HOTT 247 s.v. donkerte), by Rust 1960 DNW 22 ǃkae = 'finster werden'. Die ooreenstemming tussen 'De Qua' en ╪ghai- aan die een kant met die betekenis van 'aasvoel' (vir Aasvoeiberg), en ǃkai aan die ander kant met die betekenis van 'donkerte' of 'duisternis' (vir Duisterniskop), is sodanig dat daar op grond van klankgelykheid nouliks uitsluitsel gegee kan word. Miskien laat die prominensie waarmee Gordon die berg De Qua op sy kaart ingeteken het, die skaal oorslaan ten gunste van Aasvoeiberg (vgl. ook Topo-kadastrale reeks 1969 vel 3322 Oudtshoorn).
