A few early quotes from travel reports before 1804 to also show spelling variants (there are more) (Gamka / Gamka / Chamka / Gamca), which generally reflects a reasonable constant in the verdict. Du Plessis 1973 investigates 219-220 mentions other statements with the same stretch. At Janssens, the suction flaster is also indicated by the element -ka (Cham-), Old Cape -ǃ Ka-B, Namaǃ AB (without the skeleton; K Fiott. 430), all the other leave it away. All the segslides above declared (well on request) that the first member 'lion' means, Nama Xami, Old-Cape Gamma etc. (Hott. 369). Xami, Gamma, is shortened to gam- and at theǃ Knalz and genus suffixes of the simplex. Gamka is literally translated, 'Leure River'. See Gamka (Diep River) for another statement of the first component. The Gamka = Leure River also gave his name to other places. We call about it in the dist. Prince Albert O.M. 'Gamkasberg', a mountain on 3321 BC / BD, 'Gamkas Berg', a farm no B. 20/1879 at 3321 BC, 'Lion-Gamka', a dorpie at 3221 DD, and just above the Village 'Leeugamkadam', a dam. In both the latter, there is the doubling of the element lion, viz. The Khoekhoiangam- and the Afrikaans lion, so about 'Lion-Leue River'. Further south, just below Calitzdorp, the post office 'Eastgam' at 3321 da.

Xami, gamma, is verkort tot gam- en by die ǃka- ontbreek schnalz en genus- suffiks van die simpleks. Gamka is, letterlik vertaal, 'leeurivier'. Kyk GAMKA (Dieprivier) vir ’n ander verklaring van die eerste komponent. Die Gamka = leeurivier het sy naam ook aan ander plekke gegee. Daarvan noem ons in die dist. Prins Albert o.m. 'Gamkasberg', ’n berg op 3321 BC/BD, 'Gamkas Berg', ’n plaas nr B. 20/1879 op 3321 BC, 'leeu-Gamka', ’n dor- pie op 3221 DD, en net bokant die dorpie 'leeugamkadam', ’n dam. In albei laasgenoemdes is daar die verdubbeling van die element leeu-, nl. die Khoekhoense -gam- en die Afrikaanse leeu, so ongeveer 'leeu-leeurivier'. Verder suidwaarts, net onderkant Calitzdorp, le die poskantoor 'Oosgam' op 3321 DA.
