As always, if one is problem conscious, you stay on the lookout. In this case, we were brought by Knudsen on a track that followed us. In his TageBuch No. 7 [1843] as quoted by Prof. E Kaup (-damap) 'ie the group name should not be spelled as' 'kaup damap', because 'Kaub ... Heisst Honig'. This word for honey hit us. Kau- and soon- was normally changed- bear in the old days:, according to our spokesman on the spot, with the -da of the village name, expressed 'as' Ghowdah 'in English'. The k- and the g- difference therefore merely that the k- without, and the g- voice expressed, they are nearly alike. 'Is, and at his foot the farm' Honigfontein 'at 3318 BB, a name that is according to the Dutch spell, well as Gouda itself. Here is in this mountainous ings numerous names with the ingredient Honig-, Honey, Honey. We ask whether Gouda would not mean 'honey path', or 'port'. It is at least patterned. Is motivating from the mentioned place names, and supporting on the Namakenner and Evangelal Variable Knudsen, it is linguistically accountable. We don't just have to support Knudsen. afr Op bl. 458-9 van TH A* is twee afleidings uit resente tyd genoem waar- mee bloot klankassosiatief verklarings van die betekenis van Gouda gegee is. Ons meen dat die afleidings nie oortuig nie. Soos maar altyd gebeur as ’n mens probleembewus is, bly jy op die uitkyk. In hierdie geval is ons deur Knudsen op 'n spoor gebring wat ons gevolg het. In sy Tagebuch nr 7 [1843] soos aangehaal deur prof. E. Moritz 29/4 147, se Knudsen oor die Bergdamaras dat die skeldnaam vir hulle as 'Chou-Damras' [Xaudaman], te vertaal is met 'Dreck-damras', en dat die woord Choup tog noukeurig onderskei moet word van 'Kaup(-Damap)'\ d.w.s. die groepnaam moet nie gespel word as ‘’Kaup-Damap' nie, want 'Kaub...heisst Honig'. Hierdie woord vir heuning het ons getref. Kau- en Gou- was normaal verwissel- baar in die ou dae: Gou- word, volgens ons segsman ter plaatse, saam met die -da van die dorpsnaam, uitgespreek 'soos 'Ghowdah' in Engels'. Die K- en die G- verskil dus bloot daarin dat die K- sonder, en die G- met stem uitgespreek word, origens is hulle nagenoeg eenders. Bekyk ons die huidige kaarte, dan word ons getref deur enkele name in die bergstreke hier, soos ten weste van Gouda en suidwestelik van Porterville waar daar ’n 'Heuningberg' is, en aan sy voet die plaas 'Honigfontein' op 3318 BB, ’n naam wat volgens die Hollandse spelling oud is, wel so oud soos Gouda self. Hier is in hierdie bergomgewings talle name met die bestanddeel Honig-, Honing-, Heuning-. Ons stel die vraag of Gouda nie sou beteken: 'Heuningpad', of '-poort' nie. Dit is minstens patroonmatig. is motiveer- baar uit die genoemde plekname, en steunende op die Namakenner en Evangelievertaler Knudsen is dit taalkundig verantwoordbaar. Ons hoef nie net op Knudsen te steun nie. Korana het gau- geken vir 'heuning- koek', Griekwa die woord chue- vir 'heuning', en ook San (ǀǀkaau), almal, met vindplase, genoem by CHUE, alwaar. Ons glo dat die taalkundige argument oortuigend is. 'Heuningpoort'.
