The -R- in Bira is the ufiller Xhosa pronunciation of the Khoekhoense -GH of Bixa (Begha). The member is like old-Cape for bi = 'milk', cf. HOTT 382-3, Nama Dei- alternation B and D. The -Cha, ga, ngha - is like Nama -Xa- = rich in, Bega = 'milk kingdom' otherwise 'milky', 'whitish'. The Cum of Paterson and the Tgume of Von Winckelmann, corresponds to Nama ǀǀ gam-i = water, river, so that Paterson reports the literal translation of the full name, d.w.s. The abridged current bira (with omission of the component for 'river') means via Khoekhoens 'milk (river)', the ruling adapted to the phonology of the Xhosa. It holds no geographical connection with the equivalent Bikamma 3322 ALW. or with the African Melkrivier 3224, LG. in Dist. Pearston.

Die Cum van Paterson en die Tgume van Von Winckelmann, stem ooreen met Nama ǀǀgam-i = water, rivier, sodat Paterson die letterlike vertaling van die voile naam aangee, d.w.s. die verkorte huidige Bira (met weglating dus van die komponent vir 'rivier') beteken via Khoekhoens 'Melk(rivier)', die uitspraak aangepas by die fonologie van die Xhosa.
