Caniga
This branch of the Sunday River carries a name that is translated Khoens. Cani and variations are old-Cape for 'feel', the same word is in Nama ani- without the skeleton, a frequent phenomenon (Hott. 505); The -ga can be one of two possibilities: it can be the quantity suffix as Nama Xa, 'rich, abundant, many' and means 'feeling river' (cf. Anichab), or more likely here, it can be the Old Cape ǃ ka-b, 'river', therefore, 'feel river', or it can be a fabrication of -exa andǃ ka, ie 'Feeling River', cf. Gouga. If the ordinary pattern was followed and Vogel River is the literal translation of the inland name, as we encourage, then the closing component is equal to 'river'. We are being stucked in this by the fact that the name in this construction of feel river is preserved in the old farm names Bird River No.q.q. 11a-12 and Vogel River Poort Nr sum. Q. 14-8, both on K 3225 CC and, the same coordinates but west of the mentioned farms and not on the river, Vogel Fontein No. Q. 114-13. It's a nice casual determination for ornithology.
