In Ou-Kaaps is baie optekeninge van nama = karos, kleed, klere (HOTT 339); die -gas is soos Nama -xa = volop aan, ryk aan, die -s is lokatief, dus, soos by Gordon, die 'Karosryke Plek'. Soos die ou naam, is ook die ontstaansrede nie meer bekend nie. In Nama heet die grondwoord tans ╪nami = 'der Karos, der Schafpelz...' (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 285). Onder datum 1778-12-16 skryf Gordon in sy verhaal oor sy derde reis o.a. '...arriveerde... (by) de Namgasriviertje op de veeplaats van Pinar dus genaamt...', m.a.w. hier word die verband gelê tussen die ou en die huidige naam, tussen Namgas- rivier en Pienaarskloofrivier, lg. vir sowel die rivier as die plaas.
