Nouga
The farm 'Nouga' lies oblong about North West southeast in a coming or gap between two masses between 1 200 and 1 500 meters high in the black rugs. About the west of the farm, the 'Riet River' flows about north-south. For the full length of the farm and with one north and three southern tributaries, a tributary of the Riet River runs. At the corresponding topographical map 1971 it is reported as 'Grootkloof'. 'Nouga' and 'Grootkloof' is topographically a unit, we believe toponsimic too. If so, the member is 'now-' of Nouga like Namaǃ Now [ǃ Nau] = Strong, 'Dick' (Kr.- R. 1969 NW 300), also 'Great' (cf. Nukois in th a ** 937). The second member, '-ga', is like Nama 11ha- = 'Kluft' (Rust 1960 DNW 35); For the usual change of G and H cf. Th * 42 at 5 a 3. It seems that we have, as so often elsewhere, the phenomenon that the younger African name is a direct translation of the Khoekhoense name for the same toponimic component 'Grootkloof'.
