According to Topo Cadastral Series 1967 Skin 3218 Clanwilliam, there is about 27 km pure east of the town of Piketberg on K 3219 CC in the Clanwilliam district the farm 'Great Fountain' No.q.q. 12-22. About 3 km north of this farm is big Kardouw, farm No. 3095/1951. We believe that the farm correlates great fountain with this Gais and that the name is large fountain from the Khoekhens. The -s therefore locates a fountain, and the first member, Gai, is like Nama gei- [kai] = large, 'Gross' (Rust 1960 DNW 28).

Volgens Topo-kadastrale reeks 1967 vel 3218 Clanwilliam is daar omtrent 27 km suiwer oos van die dorp Piketberg op K 3219 CC in die distrik Clanwilliam die plaas 'Groot Fontein' nr Clw.Q. 12-22. Omtrent 3 km noord van hierdie plaas is Het Groot Kardouw, plaas nr 3095/1951. Ons meen dat die plaas Groot Fontein korreleer met hierdie Gais en dat die naam Groot Fontein ’n vertaling uit die Khoekhoens is. Die -s lokativeer dus ’n fontein, en die eerste lid, Gai-, is soos Nama Gei- [Kai-] = groot, 'gross' (Rust 1960 DNW 28).
