Tarka(-Rivier, -Stad)
Tarka and Traka are sometimes exchanged for the same place (viz. For the river that is a tributary of the Grootfish River); Gordon talks about the current Tarka as Traka. From early on, the meaning is given, viz. as 'Women's River'. The exit - ka is for 'river', lived in Old Cape, cf. HOTT 430, in Nama Depleveled asǃ (K) AB. The member for 'married woman', viz. Tara-S, has been recorded a quarter of Riebeeck's landing (Hott 511-2). 'Women's River' is the literal translation of the old retained name, the rise to the name was lost. See Traka. The name Tarka is also carried by 'Tarkabrugdam' (River), 'Tarka Bridge,' both in District Cradock, and the farm 'Tarka' geo.f. 7-12, District Knysna. joint. Tarkastad.
