Krie(Berg), Kriedouw, Kriedouw(Krans)
In 1803, the farm located next to the Olifants River, between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam, described as 'De Kriedouw Over Olifants River' (Van Reenen DG 1803 VRV 18 276 and footnote). Today, the farm carries the name 'Krieber'. 'Kriedouw' and 'Kriedouwkrans' are geographical badges belonging to the same toponimic group. In th a ** 787 S.V. Kriedouw we have the second member of the name, viz. -Douw, associated with Nama dao- = 'road, rail, gap, gate', and expressed the suspicion that the member is 'crieze' as 'Karee' (cf. Also Smith CA 1966 CNSAP 312) and on a Rhus sp. show. Now we have made a topographical determination that brings a new possibility. The river flowing through the gateway across the southern part of the farm was entered on the said topographical map as the 'Waterfall River'. It therefore seems as if the toponimic core group in this case consists of the components 'Krie (mountain)', 'Kie (Douw)' and 'Krie (Douwkrans)'. In many similar cases, we found that the Afrikaans component (s) of such a toponimic core group is a translation of the Khoekhoense. It may be that we have such a case again. 'Waterfall' is in Nama ╪ kari- [Khari] (Kweenin 1889 Wortschatz 214) that may have become in the place name 'Krie'. Then 'Kriedou' literally means 'Watervalpoort'.
