Ayes(Fontein)

On the corresponding topographical map 1972, the name 'Ayesfontein' does not occur. At the same square is 'redhead' and, slightly west, 'the reddish'. We believe these names give us the key to the statement of 'Ayes (fountain)'. In the place of Keimoe, Keimas etc. Did we make the determination that the Nama word for 'fire', viz. ǀ Ai- [ǀ Ae] (Rust 1960 DNW 21), due to its color can also be used for 'red'. Based on the topographical agreement of 'red (head)', 'red (void)' and 'ayes (fountain)' it seems as if we have the same transfer of 'fire' for 'red'. The Afrikaans and Khoekhoian names then form the components of the same toponimic naming core group, the Afrikaanss are probably translated from the khoen, at least partially. Also compare Yas, Yas (mouth), YAS (lows).

afr Op die ooreenstemmende Topografiese kaart 1972 kom die naam 'Ayesfontein' nie voor nie. Op dieselfde kwadraat is 'Rooikop' en, effens wes daarvan, 'Die Rooileegte'. Ons meen hierdie name gee vir ons die sleutel tot die verklaring van 'Ayes(fontein)'. In die plekname KEIMOE, KEIMAS ens. het ons die vasstelling gemaak dat die Namawoord vir 'vuur', nl. ǀai- [ǀae] (Rust 1960 DNW 21), vanweë sy kleur ook oordragte- lik gebruik kan word vir 'rooi'. Op grond van die topografiese ooreenkoms van 'Rooi(kop)', 'Rooi(leegte)' en 'Ayes(fontein)' lyk dit asof ons hier dieselfde oordragtelike gebruik van 'vuur' vir 'rooi' het. Die Afrikaanse en Khoekhoense name vorm dan die komponente van dieselfde toponimiese naamkerngroep, die Afrikaanses is waarskynlik uit die Khoe- khoens vertaal, minstens gedeeltelik. Vergelyk ook YAS, YAS(MOND), YAS (SE lAAGTE).
