The reason for the derivation is topographic; Lichtenstein says the mountain is flat and equal, and Nama ╪nara (Kreenley 1889 Wortschatz S.V.) fit exactly. The meaning is, according to about 'flat road', 'Platpoort', 'Flats / Port', with or without the component '-Berg', of which it is the name. Lichtenstein tells how all their wagons are surprised against the steepness. Lets look with Pettman's statement in the hook, at least, one is difficult to imagine the name Platpadberg or Vlakpoortberg for a steep mountain. Our statement is different. Pettman already indicated it in wrong order. He could not declare SAPN 39 Kardouw (Skloof) unless it is an exchange form from Nardouw in the same area, '... The Import of the Names Does Not, However, Appear, Unless It Be Another Attempt to Reproduce The Click or The Word ╪nara. Flat '(our itifies). KAR DOUW COME O.I. from nardouw. It is indeed so that k and n course alternated in many words in Old Cape, and also in some place names, cf. Hott 180-1 and 5 D 5. We believe this could have happened here, but then that Nardouw alternates with Kardouw, M.A.W. That Nardouw means the same as car douw, viz. 'Smalpoort', 'Noupoort', to which the member can be added 'mountain' Z at 3218

Die rede vir die afleiding is wel topografies; lichtenstein vertel dat die berg bo plat en gelyk is, en Nama ╪nara (Kroenlein 1889 Wortschatz s.v.) pas presies in. Die betekenis is daar- volgens ongeveer 'Platpad', 'Platpoort', 'Vlakpad/poort', met of sonder die komponent '-berg', waarvan dit die naam is. lichtenstein vertel hoe al hulle waens teen die steilte uit verrineweer is. lets lyk met Pettman se verklaring nie in die haak nie, altans, mens stel jou moeilik die naam Platpadberg of Vlakpoortberg vir 'n steil berg voor. Ons verklaring is anders. Pettman het dit reeds maar in verkeerde orde aangedui. Kar- douw kom o.i. uit Nardouw. Dit is inderdaad so dat k- en n- mekaar in talle woorde in Ou-Kaaps afgewissel het, en ook in enkele plekname, vgl. HOTT 180-1 en 5 D 5. Ons meen dit is wat hier kon gebeur het, maar dan dat Nardouw afwissel met Kardouw, m.a.w. dat Nardouw dieselfde beteken as Kar- douw, nl. 'Smalpoort', 'Noupoort', waaraan die lid 'berg' gevoeg kan/moet word. Kyk KARDOUW. Daar is suidoostelik van die Nardousberge ook 'n rivier met die naam 'Noukloof', op K 3219 AB. en noordwestelik Naauw- poort Z op 3218 BA. Dit geld hier die 'Nardousberge' (met verbindings-s) en die plase 'Nardouw' A. B en D, en ook 'Vondeling op de Nardouwsberg', almal op 3118, distrik Clanwilliam.
