Garies
The town gets its name from the river that passes there; 'Nearer The Sea The River on Which The Town is situated is Still Called Green River' (SESA 5 123). The citations are extensively enough to sit the place, because more than one place has the name. Nama ǀ Gari-B = 'Das Unkraut, the QueCke' (Kr.- R. 1969 NW 76); The -s locates. The Word also comes in Afrikaans form for various, Seifs old, place names such as Growfontein, Growth Grassvlei, Grandkraal, Growth Field, Growthvlei etc. (cf. APN 1951 187). It appears, so reported in passing, that this Green River K 3017 at Garies got his color name of the green breeding grass rather than the trees at Horn. Garies also behaved other names such as Trootweder, Growth River and Genisdal. Furthermore, there are many spelling variants of the much-recorded name, eg. Gariche, th'aries, etc., cf. Slead CJ 1973 Gazette 61.
