The African Swartpit apparently pushed the inland name a time. Nama ╪ara-b = Pit of a fruit. Which fruit type is not said by the name. Also check Arachabnu. The interesting it is: that the 'pit' has changed to 'pit', apparently people's sedimotic. In the census card of 1891 for Namaqualand, the name appears above Okiep for a farm and spelled for a land survey, in the one case 'Black well', spelled in the second case 'Zwart Put', also at Veillet with Z-, but It does not appear more than farm name in the lists of currently.

Die Afrikaanse Swartpit het die inlandse naam ‘n tydlank blykbaar verdring. Nama ╪ara-b = pit van 'n vrug. Watter vrugsoort word nie deur die naam gesê nie. Kyk ook ARACHABNU. Die interessante is dit: dat die 'pit' verander het tot 'put', blykbaar volksetimologies. In die Sensuskaart van 1891 vir Namakwaland verskyn die naam bokant Okiep vir ’n plaas en vir ‘n landmetersbaken, in die een geval gespel 'Zwarte Put', in die tweede geval gespel 'Zwart Put', ook by Veillet met Z-, maar dit verskyn nie meer as plaasnaam in die lyste van tans nie.
