Dr Van Vreden has determined the old name of the current Spitzkop (Farm Nr Hay Q.17-37) from the Griqualand West Land Court as 'GONIP'. Gonip is very clearly living in his translated form of Spitzkop: the spelling with a Z apparently shows an old writing. Spits are like Nama╪go (Rest 1960 DNW 58). The -nip contains the exit -P (Masc. Sing.) As index for a mountain name. The -ni- will in one way or another indicate a head or a point.
