Dead on the sound, the gate seems to have his name from the dabbie tree, the Tamarix USNEOIDES (Smith CA 1966 CNSAP 196). The dabbie tree is found at leaks that are brackish or salty ('where animals brackish'), and get his Khoekhozen name of dabbie tree from the salty dust layer on its leaves

Dabbiepoort' is aan die oostelike gedeelte van Aggenys se Berge geleë, in distrik Namakwaland. Afgaande op die klank lyk dit asof die poort sy naam het van die dabbieboom, die Tamarix usneoides (Smith CA 1966 CNSAP 196).
