We believe that 'Hartebeest River' is a translation of the Khoekhoians tclamabiep. 'Hartbees' is in Nama ǀǀ Khama. The TCǃ From Tclamabiep is then an attempt to reflect the lateral Schnalz and the accompanying field (ǀǀ K) in English. Tclama- would be in Nama ǀǀ Khama. The member -bie- is a locative infix, the lock -p (ml. Ekv.) Specifically indise a river name here. 'Hartbees River'. On the census map, the tclamabiep in the TClouly group River, but in the topographical series 1974 sheet 2816 Alexander Bay, the TClouly group today is the 'Kahams River'.
