The farm and (more south) The police station both lie on the Green Water River, and on the farm just south of the river lies the large 'Matsappan'. The meaning of 'more / marsh' for the farm may come from here. Linguistically everything is not yet in order. According to Van Zyl, the member can be thought together at -A-B, 'Loch' (Rust 1960 DNW 39), and the member Mats- is then equal to 'salt', for which ties are still missing.

Plaas nr 81 (Hay Q. 6-23), dist. Hay, op 2822 DB, en aldaar op DA (suid- westelik) 'n gelyknamige polisiestasie en poskantoor, aan verkeersweg. Die plaas en (meer suidelik) die polisiestasie le albei aan die Groenwaterrivier, en op die plaas net suid van die rivier le die groot 'Matsappan'. Die betekenis van 'meer/moeras' vir die plaas kom moontlik hiervandaan. Taalkundig is alles nog nie in orde nie. Volgens Van Zyl kan die lid -ap saamgedink word by -a-b, 'loch' (Rust 1960 DNW 39), en die lid mats- is dan wel gelyk te stel met 'sout-', waarvoor bande nog ontbreek.
