The -bis is placemend, and theǃ Gao will, according to Laidler, be 'smooth sand' in connection with the '(smooth) cut' which is the usual meaning of Igao (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 91).

Laidler PW 1927 Man 149 'Another similar name is P/kaoubis (now Jerusalem), which meant rubbed or scratched out; an elephant’s rubbing place. There are many rocks in Namaqualand that show these highly polished corners where the great beasts scratched their sides'.

Die -bis is plekbenoemend, en die ǃgao sal, volgens Laidler, 'glad skuur' wees in aansluiting by die '(glad) sny' wat die gewone betekenis van Igao is (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 91).
