NaUp lies at the Ham River between Undermatje No 75 and Duration (Slid) No. 78. It was a place where earlier was always water. It correlates with 'Klipfontein' on the Undermatje but disappeared on the accessible maps as a name. It can be claimed that 'Klipfontein' is a (partial) translation of NaUP. 'Stone' is in Nama o.a. Lhaub (Rust 1960 DNW 35) that can give the change H- / n- the form Naub. 'Fountain' is in Nama ǀ Au-, and the N- can be the realization of the dental slaughter, which gives both forms, as well as Nau-, with the -P (-B) of the ML. ECV. afr Naup le aan die Hamrivier tussen Ondermatje nr 75 en Duurdrift (Slid) nr 78. Dit was ’n plek waar vroeër altyd water te kry was. Dit korreleer met 'Klipfontein' op Ondermatje maar het op die toeganklike kaarte as naam verdwyn. Daar kan beweer word dat 'Klipfontein' ’n (gedeeltelike) vertaling van Naup is. 'Klip' is in Nama o.a. lhaub (Rust 1960 DNW 35) wat met die wisseling H-/N- die vorm Naub kan gee. 'Fontein' is in Nama ǀau-, en die N- kan die realisasie van die dentale slag wees, wat albei vorme gee, ǀAu- sowel as Nau-, met die -p ( -b) van die ml. ekv. as die indeks van die lopende (en deur sy stroming langerige) fontein. Omdat dit fone- ties en topografies bevredig, wil ons voorlopig daarmee volstaan. [Die woord 'voorlopig' het betrekking op die moontlikheid dat die enigsins ongewone plaasnaam 'Ondermatje' eintlik maar ’n vroeë vertaling mag wees van hierdie belangrike standhoudende waterplek Naup wat op die plaas geleë is. ’n Ondermat of voetmat is in Nama vandag + goa-b, vgl. Rust 1960 DNW 41). G- en n- wissel mekaar inderdaad af, vgl. bv. NAR- RIES/G ARIES, en -oa- het as bestaanbare variasie -au- en -ou-. Omdat so ’n verklaring vir ons nog geforseerd lyk, hoop ons op meer opklarende feite. ]
