Waar hy ontspring. is 'Hakiesdo- ringhoek'. Dit gee o.i. die sleutel vir die betekenis. Die Gan(n)a- is die kameeldoringboom, die Acacia giraffae, wat hier baie voorkom en wat in Nama ǀǀgana- is. Die -kourie- is moontlik soos Nama ǀguri = 'allein' (Rust 1960 DNW 2), met die -p van die ml. ekv. as genusteken vir 'n rivier, soos hier. Die 'Rivier ( -p) waar die eensame (ǀguri-) kameeldoringboom (ǀǀgana-) staan', of '...wat by die eensame gana-boom ontspring' ens. Opvallend hoe in die vroeë bewaarde optekeninge die -r- van -kouriep as -1- gehoor is, en hoe ook hier weer die stemhebbende -g- later stemloos geword het, of -k geword het.
