afr Die opmerklikste is seker dat ons in al ons lektuur geen enkele keer ’n verklaring van die naam gekry het nie, ook nie by Alexander nie wat gewoonlik uit sy pad gegaan het om die inlandse name te interpreteer, ook nie by Kroenlein nie wat daarvoor veel aandag gehad het. Almal op een na wat die suigkonsonant opgee, skryf dit met die serebrale ǃ. Sprigade en Moisei noem ’n wisseluitspraak Kaib. Aan die rivier (uitgang -b/-p dui gewoonlik aan dat die naam op ’n rivier betrekking kan he) was ook ’n belangrike 'village' of werf by ’n suiping waar daar uitgespan is. Willem Swartbooi het ’n tydlank hier gewoon. Nou steun ons op mnr Christian vir ’n verklaring. Hy verbind dit met Nama ǃkha = 'bliihen... ǃkhas = die Bliite' (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 227), wat geurryk is en die geur wyd versprei, dus 'Geurrivier', vanweë die bloeiende kruidgewasse daar. Die spelling op die kaarte van Opmeting is 'G(h)aa-b', op die kaart van die landmeter-generaal 1972 'Gab', wat ons vir die lemma gekies het. Net noord van die Gabrivier le die Gabibberge. Ons weet nie of daar ’n verband is nie. Krenz FK 1976 Boer Aantekening skryf hierby, ken- nelik afgaande op die klankassosiasie, 'Was die Viktoriane sku vir die ver- taling? Xaab = penis'. Indien juis, is die betekenis wat mnr Krenz gee, seker die rede hoekom niemand die verklaring wou aanbied nie. Ons glo egter nie dat sy verklaring juis is nie. Die kenner Th.
