eng Broadbent S 1835 in Pettman 1931 SAPN 15 '...in a letter written in 1835 he IBroadbentl spells it Makuasi'. Broadbent 1865 Narrative of the first introduction of Christianity amongst the Barolong tribe 59 n.a.v. die aromatiese plant 'maquassi', aangehaal deur Pettman 15, '...we perceived a strong and not disagreeable odour...we found it arose from the spearmint, which covered many acres of ground, and perfumed the air as it was bruised by the oxen and wagons'. Pettman 1931 SAPN 15 'Maquassi is said to be the Bushman name of an aromatic plant (Croton gratissimus), the leaves of which were dried and powdered and used...much as the Hottentots...used Buchu...The name appears to have passed from the plant to the locality'. PNK 1938 het brief van die sekretaris, Gesondheidskomitee van Maquassi, wat protesteer teen PNK se spelvorm as Makwassie; daaruit 'Mr Cherry, the founder of the present Town in 1907, especially named the town 'Maquassi' in order to preserve this tradition', t.w. van 'n Wesleyaanse sendingstasie en naturellestad, die stasie gestig in 1823, die eerste Blanke kind in Transvaal gebore is die seun van eerw.
