Die interessante is dat hierdie twee panne ook bekend was as KOAS(PAN) wat ons verklaar het as 'Duinepan', en, tweedens, is die naam op die Afdelingskaart in ink verander tot 'Groot Arvas', ook by 'Klein', blykbaar as aanpassing by die uitspraak en ter 'verbetering'. Feit is egter dat hierdie Awas inderdaad Awas moet wees. Die naam sluit immers aan by Nama ǀawa = 'rot' (Rust 1960 DNW 50). Dit weet ons seker omdat aan Groot Awas ’n plaas grens met ’n pan daarop, en hierdie pan is bekend as 'Rooi Vley alias Rooi Pan', wel na aanleiding van die rooi kleur van die bodem. Vandag is 'Rooi-Vley' die naam van die plaas nr B.436 waarop die vlei le. Kleurskynsel is belangrike onderskeidende eienskappe gewees, so le suidwestelik van laasgenoemde 'Blouholte', en wes van Groot-Awaspan 'Vaalvlei' Kyk verder AWAS in TH A* 258. Awaspan is dan 'Rooipan'; die Afrikaanse naam is wel ’n vertaling van die ouer, d.w.s. van die Khoekhoense naam
