afr Eerw. Fenchel is op sy jaarlikse huisbesoek van Keetmanshoop af na Mier. Hulle is op pad na die Karasberge. Hulle is nou in die 'Quellengebiet des ... lowenflusses' en kom aan in Gautawes. Dit is dus so ongeveer in 2618 CD, suidoostelik van Keetmanshoop. Die fonteine is opgedroog. Die naam Gautawes bestaan blykbaar nie meer nie. Sy betekenis lyk taamlik seker. ǃGau = 'niederwerfen...zu Boden werfen' (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 129 s.v. ǃgou), bv. deur natuurkragte soos wind of water, of 'iibrig bleiben' (aid. 128), en -tawes [-dawes] is wel die tamariskboom, in Nama dawe- (Kr.-R. 54), by Smith 1966 CNSAP 196 die Tamarix usneoides. Die 'Fontein/wa- terplek (aangedui met die fern. sing, -s) waar die omgestote of omgevalle, of andersins die oorgeblewe abiekwaboom le'.
