Kambes' is farm no. , or would have laid in Southwest of such a farm. We believe it is so, viz. That Kambes is the Khoekhoense name for 'Spitskop'. 'Spitze' is in Nama o.a. ǀ Am- (Kr. Comb-. The second member of the name, viz. -Be-, is for the locally, the lock -s fern, usually lectates a fountain or water location. It then appears that the starting point was the source at the homestead 'Kambes', and that the source name was transferred to the farm Kambes. Upon establishment of the farm south-western Kambes, the name Kambes was transferred in translation as 'Spitskop', with addition of the element 'Suidwes' for distinction of the mother farm.

Kambes' is plaas nr 498. Aan die suidwestelike kant daarvan en aangren- send is 'Spitskop Suidwes' nr 500. Geoordeel aan die naam sou ons verwag het dat 'Spitskop Suidwes' die suidwestelike gedeelte van ’n plaas 'Spitskop' sou gewees het, of ten suidweste van so ’n plaas sou gelê het. Ons meen dat dit wel so is, nl. dat Kambes die Khoekhoense naam vir 'Spitskop' is. 'Spitze' is in Nama o.a. ǀam- (Kr.-R. 1969 NW 12) wat as gedevelariseerde vorm van ǀkam goed ooreenstem met die eerste lid van Kambes, nl. Kam-. Die tweede lid van die naam, nl. -be-, is vir die loka- tief, die slot -s fern, sing lokativeer gewoonlik ’n fontein of waterplek. Dit wil dan voorkom of die beginpunt die bron by die opstal 'Kambes' was, en dat die bronnaam oorgedra is op die plaas Kambes. By totstandkoming van die plaas ten suidweste van Kambes is die naam Kambes in vertaling as 'Spitskop' daarop oorgedra, met byvoeging van die element 'Suidwes' ter onderskeiding van die moederplaas.
