Awabes

This addition is given because it offers another motivation from the farm name, viz. That the waterhole has the shape of a calabash, and that the name is transferred to the farm. This is a statement that also gets support from the old nomination of 'kromkalbas', cf. The announcements of Mr Voigt, the owner, in a * s.v. Pastor Moritz quotes from sources and maps that the farm name was also recorded as 'Awabes'. On the Surveyor General 1972's map is the spelling 'Abbabis', such as the entry with us. A drawing of the intended calbass type appears on the cover of Pastor Moritz's booklet.

eng Moritz W 1972 Ababis 3 'Ababis ... so today the farm is still on the edge of the Namib at the Tsondabrivier. Ababis called the Nama this water pike, because ABAS is the Kiirbis bottle or Kalebasse. A deep slot has eaten the rivier into the lime glomerate, which then extends to the belly of the calabash deep and round ... the open water yoke is still called 'Kalebash' today ... '
