eng We keep us from giving place name history, the quotes make it desirable to name a few facts here. The namanaam has long been replaced by his Afrikaans translation, Witbooi used exclusively only Red Bank. In 1845, the Rhine missionary Scheepmann determined it to Keetmansdorf in memory of a deputation member of the missionary fellowship, but after Scheppmann's death, it was renamed himself to Scheppmandorf, the name that all the others in writings a time long had suppressed. In Rooibank was the first printer in South West Africa, viz. Where the Nama Catechism came from the press in 1855. A monument to Scheppmann washed away in a flood in later years (W. Moritz 1972 MS Topnaars). Scheppmann follows Knudsen's system to indicate suction consonants. His mention must be transcribed as ǀ Awaǃ Hans, but the -hans is printing error for -Haus. ǀ Awa is still Nama for 'red'. About the -haus, there are three identifications, theǃ Ho = 'rock' of th hahn, theǃ ANI-B of Pettman, and thenǃ Hao-S for 'Bank', such as Moritz E.A. The word comes in. Kr. 1969 NW 170 for ASǃ Hau-s. We give a description that appears in Schultze Anuk 1904-5 162: 'Sammelbecken des Regenwaaners IM Anstehends were told Von Den Buren 'Banks' Genannt. IT EAS EIN SEICHES, ABFLUSSLOSES, UN-RELEASE MASHES Felsbecken, Das Nur Kurze Zeit Nach Kewen Voll Wasser Steh, und Dann Schnell Endunstet, so nennt the Hottentot Lhao-b. ' This statement deserves preference. 'Rooibank' is the literal translation of the old inland name.

In 1845 het die Rynse sendeling Scheppmann dit verdoop tot Keetmansdorf ter herinnering aan ’n deputasielid van die Sending- genootskap, maar na Scheppmann se dood is dit ter ere van homself herdoop tot Scheppmannsdorf, die naam wat al die ander in geskrifte ’n tyd lank verdring het. In Rooibank was die eerste drukkery in Suidwes-Afrika, nl. waar die Nama-Kategismus in 1855 van die pers gekom het. ’n Monumentjie vir Scheppmann het in later jare in ’n vloed weggespoel (W. Moritz 1972 ms Topnaars). Scheppmann volg Knudsen se stelsel om suigkonsonante aan te dui. Sy melding moet getranskribeer word as ǀAwa-ǃhans, maar die -hans is wel drukfout vir -haus. ǀAwa is nog Nama vir 'rooi'. Oor die -haus is daar drie identifikasies, die ǃho = 'rock' van Th Hahn, die ǃani-b van Pettman, en dan ǃhao-s vir 'bank', soos by Moritz e.a. Die woord kom in. Kr.-R. 1969 NW 170 voor as ǃhau-s. Ons gee ’n omskrywing wat in Schultze ANUK 1904-5 162 voorkom: 'Sammelbecken des Regenwassers im anstehenden Gestein werden von den Buren ‘Banken’ genannt. Ist es ein seichtes, abflussloses, un- regelmassiges Felsbecken, das nur kurze Zeit nach einem Regen voll Wasser steht, und dann schnell eindunstet, so nennt es die Hottentotten lhao-b.' Hierdie verklaring verdien voorkeur. 'Rooibank' is die letterlike vertaling van die ou inlandse naam.
