Khukammi

We come this old name so far alone with Rev. Vollmer Tea. He and his family are traveling from Rehoboth to his new site at Hoachanas by Ossewa. Here they come to a fountain at the Olifants River, east of Rehoboth and Northern Hoachanas, their destination. Here was a bunch of Captain Cornelius's people. The fountain had only a namanaam in 1853. Then it appears on cards before, so on the Krikriekarte 1904 as 'Doornfontein', on the DSWA series 1911 Blatt 21 Arahoab enrolled as a registered farm complex as 'F (poor) Dornfontein', 'F (poor) Dornfontein OST' and '-WEST', today in the same spelling respectively numbered 258, 256 and 257. 'Dornwasser' is the literal translation (Nama ǀǀ khu- = thorn, and ǀǀ gami- = water), but ǀǀ Gami is also as Appointment of eg. 'Fountain' used, like here. Vollmer follows his own system in 1853 to give suction consonants: the lower case q in front set the lateral, cf. Th a * 38. He wrote ǀǀ Khu ǀǀ Kammi. The 11khu- is obviously understanding as 'thorn tree', an Acacia Sp.

afr Ons kom hierdie ou naam tot dusver nog alleen by eerw. Vollmer tee. Hy en sy gesin is per ossewa op reis van Rehoboth af na sy nuwe standplaas te Hoachanas. Hier kom hulle aan by ’n fontein aan die Olifantsrivier, ooste- lik van Rehoboth en noordelik van Hoachanas, hulle bestemming. Hier was ’n klomp van kaptein Cornelius se mense. Die fontein het in 1853 nog net ’n Namanaam gehad. Daarna kom dit op kaarte vertaald voor, so op die Kriegskarte 1904 as 'Doornfontein', op die DSWA-reeks 1911 Blatt 21 Arahoab as geregistreerde plaaskompleks ingeskryf as 'F(arm) Dorn- fontein', 'F(arm) Dornfontein Ost' en '-West', vandag in dieselfde spelling onderskeidelik genommer 258, 256 en 257. 'Dornwasser' is die letterlike vertaling (Nama ǀǀkhu- = doring, en ǀǀgami- = water), maar ǀǀgami word ook as benoeming van bv. 'fontein' gebruik, soos hier. Vollmer volg in 1853 nog sy eie stelsel om suigkonsonante weer te gee: die kleinletter q vooraan stel die lateraal voor, vgl. TH A* 38. Hy het geskryf ǀǀKhuǀǀkammi. Die 11khu- is natuurlik te verstaan as 'doringboom', ’n Acacia sp.
