Heikub

Our only recording of this name, o.w. The place is west of Rehoboth, slightly south, and correlates exactly with the current big farm Doornboom No. 316, which is also a translation. The member -ku- is like Nama 11khu- = 'Dornbaum' (Rest 1960 DNW 14) and the member is like Nama Jhai = 'Fahl' (Rest 20), the whole 'Vaal Tower tree', in literal translation. The loss thorn tree is an abbreviation of the Vaalkameloingboom, the Acacia haematoxylon (cf. Smith 1966 cnsap 477), this tree type was abundant in this area, cf. Also haikoos in th a ** 511. In the farm name, the translated form is further shortened to 'Doornboom'. The -b of the ml. EKV. In-kub suspect that the starting point of the name was the creek and not a fountain / source, look for topographical details SWA series 1974 sheet 2316 Rehoboth. The original Khoekhozen name has disappeared and has been replaced by the translated Dutch form.

Smith 1966 CNSAP 477), Hierdie boomsoort was volop in hierdie omgewing, vgl. ook HAIKOOS in TH A** 511.
