In die sin van 'staan' word -ma met 'n ganasaleerde klinker uitgespreek, en dit skryf Hahn nie. Maar dan is dit ook 'n feit dat die nasaliteit van die klinker van ’n bestanddeel dikwels in 'n pleknaam nie meer gehoor word nie. Moontlik is dit dus om hierdie naam te verstaan as 'Begraafplek', met hierdie -ma- as ’n lokatiewe morfeem. Die ml. ekv. -b wys daarop dat die naam hier op die (langerige) rivier betrek is.
