Volgens mnr Olsen is dit te ontleed in ǀguni- = duwweltjies, en -xa- = baie, oorvloed van, met fern.-uitgang -s wat hier ook lokatief is en waarskynlik, soos meestal die geval is, vir ’n fontein wat die beginpunt van die naam is, as bron ook op die Kriegskarte, aan die rivier.
