Gobabis (lay right east of town), so that the current name is a direct translation with omission of the first component 'red', for Nama ǀ Aba, ǀ Awa = red. In the riverbed by hand or implement to water digging (some animal species do it with the hoof or claw), also passed into Afrikaans.
